PRONOUN – DEFINITION AND EXPLANATION – PART.1
Pronoun is a word used instead of a noun, i.e, in place of a noun.
It can also be called as, replacement of noun.
I, we, you, they, his, her, their etc
These all are pronouns and are used in place of noun.
For example the following sentences show how these words are used as replacement of noun;
Ali and Ahmad are best players. They are unbeatable.
In above example Ali and Ahmad is noun. And the word they is used to replace these nouns in the next sentence.
It is common thing that if we used the same noun in the next sentence the whole paragraph looks clumsy. And it causes awkwardness for the reader too.
For example if we write,
Ali and Ahmad are best players. Ali and Ahmad are unbeatable. Ali and Ahmad are….
This type of composing casts negative impressions over the reader. That is why pronouns are used to make writing attractive, less cumbersome and less repetitive.
Similarly following examples can be considered;
Ayesha is an industrious student. She always stands first in her class.
Tariq and I visited Murree. We had a good time together.
Cat is a pet animal. It drinks milk.
I bought a new pen. It is beautiful.
These pronouns can be in different case. For example;
I give her a pen.
In above sentence there are two pronouns I and her; where I is the subject whereas her is object. That is the objective case of she. It means that pronoun may differ in its case as where required. Similarly consider the following statement;
A book was given to us by the teacher.
In this case the voice of the sentence is passive. Owing to which the subject we becomes us.
These all cases are deeply discussed in the classification of pronoun, given in the following link.
