INDEFINITE ARTICLE, A – DEFINITE ARTICLE – ARTICLES-PART.2
A is used before the words starting with consonant sound. As
A book, a car, a dog, a girl, a bat, a pen etc.
We can notice here that these all words are not specific. While a and an just categorize them as singular countable noun. Thus a and an means one or single. Which also implies that indefinite article a and an are used only with singular countable nouns.
We also notice some words starting with vowel letters, but they give consonant sound when pronounced. i.e,
A university, a one-eyed beggar, a union.
There is one more exception which is not commonly practiced. Because some native speakers use indefinite article an with the words starting with h preceding any vowel letter. It is so because they don’t stress the first syllable of such words. i.e,
An historical building. Etc
But commonly indefinite article a is used in such case.
We also use indefinite article a when to talk about any proper noun that is vague or not cleared. Consider the example;
A Waqar topped the CSS exams.
In the above example, somebody narrates that a boy named Waqar has topped the exam of CSS. But it is not cleared that who the boy is?
Commonly the is used
*before proper nouns; i.e,
The Holy Quran, the Royal Palace, the Sahara, the Arabian sea.
In above examples all the nouns are proper ones. That’s why the is used before them.
*To make common noun, proper or to talk about a person or thing, already has referred to. As;
You don’t seem to be well; you should see the doctor at the right corner of the street. (The particular doctor; whose clinic is at the right corner.)
The boy was badly injured. (The boy with whom some incident was happened.)
Let’s go to the park. (The only park in that place.)
*To talk about the things unique of their class.
The ocean, the sky, the earth, the moon, the sun etc.
*To classify a common noun as an abstract noun to make it prominent;
Finally the monster (bad spirit or some terrible ghost) of her fear was ruined.
